What is MCP, exactly? It’s an emerging open standard (originally introduced by Anthropic in late 2024) that defines how AI models can connect with external data sources and services in a structured, secure way. Instead of an ad-hoc, bespoke integration for every tool, MCP provides a uniform protocol. An AI agent using MCP can essentially “call” a tool or query a database as part of its reasoning process, much like a human employee might consult an internal knowledge base or run a report. One industry leader even noted that MCP’s open framework has "quickly become the gold standard for how LLMs interact with tools," given its rapid adoption and the interoperability it enables. In our context, this means MCP is the glue that connects AI roles to the information and actions they require – a critical piece of the LLM Suite’s architecture.
Perhaps the best way to understand MCP servers is to imagine them as context-specific micro-services for your AI. Each MCP server represents a particular domain or resource:

They deliver just-in-time knowledge or perform actions so the AI agent can focus on higher-level logic.
Let’s illustrate how an MCP-enabled AI agent might select the right “context server” for the job at hand. In the following diagram, an AI orchestrator (the LLM agent) receives a user request and dynamically routes queries to the appropriate MCP servers based on what’s needed – be it pulling documents from a knowledge base, fetching numbers from a data warehouse, or interacting with a CRM system. Each MCP server supplies the context or executes the task, and the orchestrator LLM then synthesizes a response.

This approach dramatically reduces the risk of AI “hallucinations” or flailing with wrong answers, because the LLM isn’t operating in a vacuum – it’s grounded in reliable data and actions provided by these context servers. It’s the equivalent of giving a human employee access to all the right databases and tools with one click; their output improves because they’re always pulling from up-to-date, relevant sources.

In practical terms, that means your marketing director spends more time crafting campaign strategy and less time pulling data from last quarter’s reports – because the AI can fetch and summarize those in seconds. Your customer success team can focus on solving complex client problems, while the AI summarizer pre-reads all the relevant client communications and metrics for them. The cognitive “background noise” fades, and human attention can shift to the creative, strategic, and complex tasks that truly add value.

The CFO could later leverage those same servers to equip a finance-planning AI, or the COO might combine them with a new logistics server to create an operations assistant. This composability is powerful – it means your organization gets smarter and more capable with each new AI integration, not more siloed.
